Training is held twice weekly on the Kallang Basin (see map), usually on Wednesday nights at 5:45 p.m. and Saturday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. However, please contact us before your first practice to confirm the exact timing.
We need someone to take on writing up a review for the results page that covers the Thanksgiving Challenge. This would give you top billing on the home page as well. Usually Tharin does this kind of thing (and well) but we need to pass the responsibility for this around a bit.
Tharin, you have any comment on this? Do you want to nominate someone?
The focus of my land training program is really variety and mix it up. I like to ensure good quality time at Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Emerald Hill and if time is short some around the pool workouts at home. I try and stick to beer but I've found a quality scotch neat, no ice is becoming very enjoyable (although an expensive workout here in Singapore). Pool workouts often consist of a good bottle of NZ Sauv Blanc or an Aussie or Italian Pinot Gris/Grigio.
Seriously though, as per the above I try and mix it up for variety with a run once a week for cardio (mixing up the pace throughout) or a swim and again mixing up the pace - freestyle and some breastroke.
I try and do at least one or two weight sessions focusing on lat pull downs, bent over rows, chest presses etc.
This year I'm going to focus on more core work - medicine ball work etc and cross-training - I'm trying out Les' Military Fit tomorrow night!!
Myself, I am very excited about where we are as a team.
Let me count the ways.
1) We have some great depth as shown by our results. No other expat team had the boats we did in some of these really challenging races. Instead, I think they focused on the one event that, well, I wish we could have won again, but I'm totally motivated now to train harder than ever and to do what it takes to get the cup back, and to beat more local teams.
2) There is no doubt that we have earned a good deal of respect in the last two years and that the other teams know our performances are not just lucky adventures.
3) While we're on the same level competitively, with our Kallang colleagues, we're also different in many, many ways. We have a great attitude and our sportsmanship is exemplary. Nothing irks me more than hearing how the Germans have dissed us or other teams are writing us off and I LOVE PROVING TO OURSELVES THAT WE'RE BETTER THAN THAT, EVERY RACE.
4) I think for us to train as little as we admittedly do together, and to still be where we are, is a testament to every person on our team who does their best to be coachable and to adapt to what Jamey asks us to do. And our performance is proof that the way we're being coached is working!
I just do cardio on machines (elliptical and treadmill) and weights. For weights, I'm not trying to get big so I work out at a weight range (pyramids) of 4 sets of 15 reps.
OC is my main supplementary exercise to dragon boat, but that's not on land obviously.
Sometimes I skateboard on the road between OT and Muddy Murphy's, but only at night and only after I've been drinking.
Okay, so we're being offered some great options for land training. Do you really mean to tell me that no one on our team does any kind of workouts beyond what we do on Wednesday / Saturday? Really? Please consider making a small contribution to this forum and post your favorite land workouts.
Cool. So, who will do the write up for this event? ;) Would love to see it go onto the site as "New Page" and possibly as part of the "Results" section. We also still need a writeup for the Barbarians' trip to Hong Kong and for the German Maneuver Cup.
Damn good time! Our team was well-represented there with about 10-12 people. The Germans won but we came in 2nd. Actually, I have to admit that Elektra and I let them win because, as hosts, we didn't want to dominate our guests too much. Also, ICB is happy since we brought a lot of people in on their slowest night.
Yeah, that was a great weekend of racing. I love the short course format.
Now I'm just trying to get back to 100% health so I can continue more serious training for Boat Quay.
I also think it's going to take people time to get used to the idea that they can post comments and actually have an active discussion forum on the new site.
Not surprising given the dearth of similar functionality available on Y! Groups. That said, let's get to it people!
Check out the Flickr integration! Everyone looks awesome especially when you use the cool "lightbox" display look and feel for the slide show! I love it! :p
Das Boot, no small feet...oh, man...that hurts... ;-)
You've got to hand it to the guys, not everyone would take on a das boot ;-)
Summary: It was kickass
More Info: We had 31 new people and about 25 experienced team members, equaling three full boats on the water. The season is shaping up very well!
Food afterwards was catered by Botak Jones and there was plenty of beer. Enough said.

Bring it on, next year!

I skateboard/longboard around the CBD usually.
Calling all American women paddlers to come to practice on Wed. Maybe we can get a 10 pax boat and have a quick session for our race on Saturday? Ann

This day totally rocked. It was awesome to be a part of such a great team and to win the expat division...whoah! Big kudos to everyone!
